The Love of God

I am nothing at all without love,
It should dictate everything I do,
Motivate every word that I speak
Whether to the many or to few.

I am nothing at all without love,
It should surround me like a shroud,
It should be my only concern
As I minister to one, or a crowd.

I am nothing at all without love,
When I stand before God on that day,
Whatever I have done on this earth,
By love will be all judged and weighed.

— Gertrude Jefferie

It is Written
Audio MP3

If we would know thy will O Lord
We’ll seek the Pages of thy Word.
Within thy book all knowledge lies,
Its secrets hid from great and wise.

The Truth like shining jewels fair
The humble shall find hidden there.
There’s strength and hope and courage too,
For all who will its words pursue.

When testings come, hard to endure,
God’s written promises are sure.
Yes, "It is written," Jesus said,
When by the devil he was led.

God’s Word a power can always be
To make the adversary flee.
If we would be approved of God,
We’ll study his most precious Word.

Victory Over Self
Audio MP3

When you never care to refer to yourself in conversation, record your own good works, or itch after commendation, when you can truly love to be unknown ... that is victory over self.

When your good is evil spoken of, your wishes are crossed, your advice disregarded, your opinions ridiculed, and you refuse anger to rise in your heart or even defend yourself ... that is victory over self.

When you can receive reproof from one of less stature than yourself, and can humbly submit inwardly as well as outwardly, without resentment ... that is victory over self.

When you are forgotten, neglected, or purposely set at naught, and you do not sting with insult or oversight, counted worthy to suffer for Christ ... that is victory over self.

Sanctified afflictions are like so many artificers working on a pious man’s crown to make it more bright and massive.

— Ralph Cudworth

Never was there a man of deep piety, who has not been brought into extremities — who has not been put into fire.

Richard Cecil

Abide in me, there have been moments pure
When I have seen Thy face and felt thy power.
Then evil lost its grasp and passion hushed
Around divine enchantment of the hour.

These were but seasons beautiful and rare;
Abide in me and they shall ever be;
I pray thee now fulfill my earnest prayer,
Come Lord abide in me and I in Thee.

— Alice M. Ripper

Lord, help me live from day to day
In such a self-forgetful way
That even when I kneel to pray
My prayer shall be for others.

Help me in all the work I do
To ever be sincere and true,
And know that all I’d do for you
Must need be done for others.

Let "self" be crucified and slain
And buried deep, and all in vain
May efforts be to rise again,
Unless to live for others.

And when my work on earth is done
And my new work in heaven’s begun
May I forget the crown I’ve won
While thinking still of others.

— C. D. Meigs
