In the Beginning

This first issue for 2013, "Considerations for the New Year," contains many reflections on the passing of the year from a Christian perspective. Each new year brings opportunities to further proclaim God’s mercy and to praise His goodness.

The opening essay, "Time," urges us to view our life from God’s standpoint, not our own. Those who have consecrated their lives should use their available time preparing their minds and developing their characters for the work of the next age.

"Looking Forward" examines the importance of assessing progress along the narrow way. Each trial is an opportunity to do so. Ultimately it is only the strength we achieve through faith that will carry us successfully from year to year.

"Fresh Opportunities" is a consideration of biblical new beginnings. After the flood, Noah and his family experienced a new beginning. When the descendants of Israel exited Egypt, they began anew with the opportunity to know Jehovah and to be under His personal care as no other people ever were. When Solomon later inaugurated the Temple, he introduced a powerful worship center for the nation and many rich lessons for us.

"Trust Him Even in Adversity" reminds us of God’s great goodness. During its years of favor, Israel experienced many lessons that also will help us to assess our relationship with God. Reverence and reliance are essential. We must find and remove the distractions and hindrances that prevent us from a full commitment.

"Portrait of a Servant" examines the principles of service to God. His ultimate goal is to produce a human race that is motivated by love and concern. Meanwhile, His desire for the prospective Church members is for them to be willing servants. Loving one another is the highest motive a follower can achieve in his or her walk with the Lord.

"Formula for Consecrated Living" is a verse-by-verse study of Romans 12. There the entire walk of a Christian is outlined. The humility and dedication of Jesus forms a lesson for all who would be taught by God. Sympathy and compassion are necessary elements in any follower of Christ.

Finally, "The Gift of Inspiring" discusses how we are to motivate fellow Christians to a higher level of service. Our responsibility is to encourage others in their walk with Jesus. Because trials are the tools for improvement, our encouragement provides significant help to those who are dismayed.

The editors of The Herald of Christ’s Kingdom pray that each of you will have a spiritually prosperous year in the Lord.
